Oldbury electric-shower safety case study

A burning smell revealed
a dangerous shower connection.

The customer stopped using the shower after noticing a burning smell and smoke. Inspection found a badly overheated cable extension and connector inside the unit. The unsafe alteration was removed, a new Triton shower was installed and the circuit was tested before handover.

What happened

Burning smells and smoke from an electrical appliance must never be ignored.

Laura contacted SL4 after the shower stopped working properly and she noticed a burning smell and smoke. She did the right thing by stopping use and arranging an inspection rather than trying the shower again.

The existing 10 mm² shower supply had been extended with a smaller 6 mm² cable and a basic connector block inside the unit. The connection had overheated severely, damaging the insulation and melting into the shower's plastic body.

A photograph can show the visible damage, but only inspection and electrical testing can establish whether the fixed wiring remains suitable. After the unsafe alteration was removed, the circuit was checked and a new Triton shower was installed and tested.

How the job was made safe

Find the cause.
Test before replacement.

The important part of a shower replacement is not just fitting a new unit. The supply, connections and protective measures must be checked as part of the work.

01

Warning signs acted on

The customer stopped using the shower as soon as burning and smoke were noticed. Continuing to use an appliance with these symptoms can allow heat damage to worsen.

02

Unsafe connection removed

The damaged cable section and connector were taken out rather than hidden or reused. The heat-affected components were clearly documented for the customer.

03

Circuit condition checked

The fixed shower circuit was tested before a replacement was connected, helping confirm that the remaining wiring was suitable for the new unit.

04

New shower installed

A new Triton electric shower was fitted, connected correctly and tested before the installation was handed back for use.

Customer feedback

A real review for
this installation.

★★★★★
New shower installed and working great

Messaged him on a Saturday evening and he was at ours on the Monday with a quote — not overpriced at all. By Wednesday, the new shower was installed and working great! Will definitely be contacting again should we need an electrician.

Smell burning or see smoke?

Stop using the shower immediately.

Do not remove the cover or try the shower again. If there is fire or ongoing smoke, get everyone out and call 999. Otherwise, isolate only if it is safe and arrange urgent electrical advice.
