Electric shower replacement

More than a
simple shower swap.

Electric showers place a high load on the electrical installation. Before a replacement is connected, the existing cable, circuit protection, isolation, earthing and shower rating must be checked to confirm that the supply is suitable.

What’s included

Professional from
start to finish.

Electric shower replacement and related fault-finding are available across Dudley, Oldbury, Sedgley, Wolverhampton, Halesowen, Tipton, Willenhall and surrounding Black Country areas. Send the existing shower, replacement model and consumer-unit photographs for an initial assessment.

01

Existing circuit assessment

The shower rating is compared with the circuit cable, installation method, protective device and available supply before the replacement is approved.

02

Cable and connections

Accessible terminations are checked for loose conductors, overheating, damaged insulation, unsuitable joints and signs of previous alteration.

03

RCD and circuit protection

The protective device and RCD arrangements are identified and tested where applicable, with any limitations or recommended improvements explained clearly.

04

Local isolation

The shower switch or pull-cord is checked for suitability, condition and correct operation as part of the installation.

05

Replacement installation

A suitable customer-supplied or agreed replacement shower is mounted, connected and commissioned in accordance with its requirements.

06

Testing and documentation

The completed work is inspected and electrically tested, with the appropriate certification or documentation provided where required.

01

Match the electrical rating

The proposed shower's kW rating must be suitable for the existing circuit—not simply similar in appearance or plumbing position.

02

Check for heat damage

Discolouration, melted insulation, brittle plastic and burning smells can indicate a poor or overheating connection that needs urgent attention.

03

Test before handover

The fixed circuit and completed connection are checked rather than assuming that a newly fitted shower makes the installation safe.

Burning smell, smoke or crackling?

Stop using the shower. Do not remove the cover or try it again. Call 999 for fire or continuing smoke; otherwise arrange urgent electrical advice.

Simple process

What happens next

  1. 1Send the postcode, a photograph of the complete existing shower and its rating label if visible.
  2. 2Send the make, model and kW rating of the proposed replacement, plus the consumer unit with only its normal flap open.
  3. 3The existing circuit, protection, isolation and connections are assessed before the replacement is confirmed.
  4. 4The suitable shower is installed, tested and handed over with the relevant documentation.

Helpful answers

Common questions
answered clearly.

Practical information before you arrange a quotation or site visit.

How much does an electric shower replacement cost?

A straightforward like-for-like replacement starts from £170 for labour when the existing circuit, protection and isolation are suitable. The shower unit, unexpected faults, circuit alterations and other remedial work are additional and are discussed before proceeding.

Can I replace my shower with a higher-kW model?

Not automatically. A higher-powered shower may require a different cable size, protective device or circuit arrangement. The proposed shower rating must be checked against the existing installation before it is connected.

Can you supply the replacement shower?

Yes, or a suitable customer-supplied unit can usually be installed. Send the exact make, model and electrical rating before purchase so compatibility with the existing supply can be considered.

What should I do if my shower smells of burning?

Stop using it immediately and do not remove the cover. If there is fire or continuing smoke, get everyone out and call 999. Otherwise, isolate only if it is safe and arrange urgent electrical advice.

Why does my shower trip the RCD or circuit breaker?

Possible causes include a fault within the shower, heat-damaged connections, moisture, insulation breakdown, a cable fault or unsuitable protection. Repeatedly resetting the device is not a diagnosis; the circuit and shower need testing.

What photographs should I send?

Send the complete shower, its make and model, the proposed replacement, the shower switch or pull-cord and the consumer unit with only its normal hinged flap open. Never remove a screwed electrical cover.
