Wednesbury EV charger remedial project

Existing EV charger
assessed and corrected.

Tami contacted SL4 after becoming concerned about an EV charger installation carried out previously at her Wednesbury home. She had already switched the charger off. The existing arrangement was assessed, specific issues were identified and targeted remedial work was completed before the charger was returned to service.

What was found

Targeted remedial work rather than unnecessary replacement.

The existing charger circuit was connected to a B20 MCB and did not have dedicated 30 mA RCD protection. There was no surge protection device in the consumer unit. The existing 20 A double-pole local isolator did provide isolation; the remedial work addressed the overall protective arrangement for this specific charging circuit.

A B20 MCB is not inherently unsafe, and the absence of an SPD alone does not automatically make every installation unsafe or non-compliant. For this installation, the agreed remedial work replaced the B20 MCB with a Wylex B40 30 mA Type A double-pole RCBO and added a Type 2 SPD.

The charger supply used 6 mm² twin-and-earth cable. A short section of the standard PVC cable had been left directly exposed to outdoor environmental conditions between the wall and the bottom of the charger. It was rerouted to enter the charger directly from the wall, avoiding unnecessary replacement of the complete cable run.

What the remedial work involved

Correct the protection.
Improve the cable entry.

The existing equipment and cable run were retained where appropriate, while the identified protective and external-entry details were corrected.

01

Existing circuit assessed

The EV circuit was found on a B20 MCB without dedicated 30 mA RCD protection. The existing consumer unit also had no SPD. The 20 A double-pole switch did provide local isolation and was not presented as having no isolating function.

02

EV protection upgraded

The B20 MCB was replaced with a Wylex B40 30 mA Type A double-pole RCBO, providing dedicated residual-current protection and double-pole disconnection for this charging circuit.

03

Type 2 surge protection added

A compatible Type 2 surge protection device was installed in the existing Wylex consumer unit as part of the remedial work.

04

External cable entry corrected

The existing 6 mm² twin-and-earth was rerouted so it entered the charger directly from the wall, removing the short externally exposed loop. The redundant opening in the bottom of the charger was then blanked.

05

Returned to service

After the remedial work the charger was returned to service and the vehicle was successfully charging.

Customer feedback

A real review for
this installation.

Gave me peace of mind

Shaun fixed a previous unsafe insulation on my EV charger. He gave me peace of mind and is 100% professional. I have asked him to quote me for future work. The best and I would definitely recommend.
