Why does my RCD keep tripping—and what should I do?

An RCD switching off is usually a sign that it has detected electrical leakage. The cause may be an appliance, moisture, damaged wiring or the combined leakage from several items—not necessarily the RCD itself.

The simple answer

Repeated tripping is a warning, not a nuisance to bypass.

The RCD compares current leaving and returning through the installation. If enough current is escaping from the intended path, it disconnects the protected circuits. Finding the cause requires a logical process and electrical testing.

Because one RCD can protect several circuits, the item that appears to lose power may not be the source of the problem.

What may be happening

Four common groups of causes.

Faulty applianceHeating elements, washing machines, kettles, outdoor equipment and damaged flexes can develop leakage.
MoistureWater entering an outside light, socket, junction or cable can cause intermittent trips, especially in wet weather.
Wiring or accessory faultDamaged insulation, loose connections or trapped cables can allow current to escape to earth.
Combined leakageSeveral electronic appliances may each leak a small current; together they can approach the RCD operating level.

What to do safely

Reduce the risk without dismantling anything.

    Check for immediate dangerIf there is burning, heat, smoke, sparking or damaged equipment, keep away and treat it as urgent.

    Note what was operatingRecord which appliances were running, the weather and whether one circuit or several lost power.

    Unplug a suspect portable appliance only if safeDo not move anything hot, wet, damaged or built in. Never open an electrical accessory or consumer unit.
  4. 04
    Stop after another tripIf the RCD trips again, will not reset or the cause is unclear, leave the affected circuit off and arrange fault-finding.

Never hold an RCD on, bypass it or replace it with a different device to stop the tripping. That removes protection without correcting the fault.

Can I keep resetting an RCD?

A single reset after an obvious temporary event may restore power, but do not repeatedly reset a device that trips again. It is responding to leakage or a fault that needs to be identified.

Can one faulty appliance trip several circuits?

Yes. A shared RCD may protect several circuits, so a fault or leakage on one appliance or circuit can switch off everything connected through that RCD.

Why does it trip when it rains?

Moisture entering outside lights, sockets, junctions or damaged cables is one possible cause. Leave the affected equipment off and arrange investigation rather than repeatedly resetting it.
