How do I know whether my house needs a full rewire?

Age alone does not provide the answer. The condition and type of wiring, earthing, protective devices, alterations and test results all matter. An inspection or EICR can help establish whether a full rewire, targeted improvements or no immediate replacement is the sensible option.

Can you rewire part of a property rather than the whole house?

Yes, where the existing circuits and proposed work make a partial rewire appropriate. The retained installation still needs to be compatible with the new work and capable of being tested satisfactorily.

Can a rewire be completed while the home is occupied?

Sometimes, but it normally takes more planning and can take longer. Access, furniture, floor coverings, temporary power and the order of rooms all need to be agreed before work starts.

Who makes good the walls after wiring?

Cable routes and the expected level of disturbance are discussed in the quotation. The scope will state whether any chasing or lifting is included and whether plastering, decorating or other making-good is by others.

Will a new circuit need its own protective device?

Normally, yes. The circuit design considers the connected load, cable route, disconnection times, RCD requirements and the existing consumer unit. If the current board cannot accept the work safely, the options will be explained before quoting.

Will I receive a certificate after a rewire or new circuit?

Yes. New circuits and rewiring are inspected and tested, with an Electrical Installation Certificate supplied. Any applicable notification requirements are also explained.
