Replace it for the

An older fuseboard does not automatically need replacing. I assess the protection, condition and installation it serves, then explain the sensible options in plain English—without using age alone as a sales pitch.

Limited or outdated protection

Older fusewire boards, missing RCD protection or equipment that no longer suits the installation may justify an assessment.

02 · Condition

Damage, heat or repeated tripping

Visible damage, signs of overheating or persistent faults need proper investigation rather than simply resetting a switch.

03 · Future work

New circuits or larger loads

An EV charger, extension, rewire or other new supply can be a good time to review capacity, protection and available space.

Practical information before you arrange a quotation or site visit.

How can I get a consumer-unit quotation?

Send a clear photo of the whole consumer unit with its normal hinged lid or flap open so every breaker and label is visible, plus a wider photo showing the surrounding space and the electricity meter. Do not remove the screwed front cover or touch anything inside. Include your postcode and any planned work such as an EV charger.

Does an old fuseboard always need replacing?

No. Age alone does not automatically mean a consumer unit must be replaced. The condition of the equipment, the protection provided, the installation it serves and any planned work all need to be considered. I will explain what I find and whether an upgrade is worthwhile.

How much does a consumer-unit upgrade cost?

The price depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring, earthing and bonding, meter and supply arrangements, access and the equipment required. Clear photos often provide enough information for an initial assessment; if the installation needs closer inspection, I will explain that before quoting.

Will the existing circuits be tested?

Yes. Key checks are carried out before the change, followed by full verification of the connected circuits after installation. The results are recorded on the electrical certificate.

Do modern consumer units include surge protection?

Type 2 surge protection and individual RCBO circuit protection are commonly included where appropriate. The exact equipment is selected after assessing the existing installation and supply.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. The completed work is fully tested and an Electrical Installation Certificate is provided. Any additional notification requirements are explained as part of the quotation and completion paperwork.
